Frugal Exercise Tips
Staying in shape doesn't have to involve expensive classes or gym memberships. These frugal exercise tips show you how to get a great workout without spending a penny.
Forget the gym. Gym memberships may seem like a deal if they include classes, great facilities, top-notch equipment, etc. And it's true that paying for all the included features separately might be substantially more than the monthly fee (have you priced yoga classes lately?) - not to mention the initial sign-up fee. But most people start strong with a membership and then taper off until they realize one day that months have gone by without them going to the gym at all. And they still have a year left on their membership contract. That's money down the drain. Just work out at home. That way, if you get lazy, at least it hasn't cost you anything extra!
Work out your library card. You don't have to rely on what you can remember from 7th Grade gym class. A lot of great workout DVDs, as well as books about exercise and nutrition, can be found at the library absolutely free.
Exercise your mouse. The Internet is a treasure trove of frugal exercise tips. A number of sites provide free exercise resources, including videos and targeted exercises, workout logs and more. Just a few examples I've found:
- www.exercisetv.tv - full-length workout videos, targeted short videos and workout plans for all levels of fitness, from beginner to advanced.
- About.com Workout Center - free workout routines as well as a "Workout Finder" to help you determine the right workout for you
- www.workoutz.com - free downloadable videos, specialty training, targeted exercises and workout programs
Turn on your TV. You probably already have access to a number of free workout routines, right in your own living room. A number of TV networks offer exercise programs, usually on weekday mornings about 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. The programs range from 30 minutes to an hour, and you don't have to get up before dawn to try them out. DVR various programs and do the workouts on your schedule. When you find a program you like, set it to record regularly, and you'll have a fresh, regular workout waiting for you on your DVR whenever you have time.
Go outside. This is the easiest frugal exercise tip there is. It doesn't involve a special program or equipment - it just involves putting on your tennies and getting off the couch! Take advantage of your city's hike-and-bike trails. Go for a walk in your own neighborhood. Walk the dog. Ride your bike. Play with your kids in the front yard. Or do some yard work (no, your wife didn't pay me to say that). Exercise doesn't have to be a particular routine while wearing lycra. You just need to get active. And you're a lot more likely to do something active outside than inside.
