Frugal Beauty Tips

Looking great doesn't have to cost a fortune. These frugal beauty tips will show you how to look like a million bucks but spend pennies.

Frugal Beauty Tips for Clothes

Everybody's gotta have clothes. Even nudists get cold sometimes. But there are several ways you can maintain a great wardrobe while keeping your costs down.

Go vintage. By "vintage," I mean "used." Resale stores often carry clothes that have barely been worn, and it's not uncommon to find high-end clothes on the racks. A thrift shop in a really nice neighborhood, for instance, is going to take in donations from the well-heeled people who live in that neighborhood. And sometimes people donate or sell perfectly good articles of clothes because they find they just never wear them or their size has changed. Grab those hand-me-downs for a discount! For more tips on buying secondhand items, see my Buying Used page.

Swap stuff. If you get tired of an item or can no longer use it for whatever reason, but the item is still in good shape, considering swapping it. You can have a good old-fashioned swap party with friends, or you can take part in an online swap meet like Swapstyle.com, where users from all over the world trade and sell clothes, accessories, cosmetics and shoes.

Avoid "Dry Clean Only." Clothes that need to be dry cleaned will cost far more in the long run than the purchase price. Over the life of the garment, you'll spend a fortune getting it laundered. So, stick to fabrics that you can wash at home.

Go cheap for trendy items. Fashion items that are really trendy will be untrendy by next season. So, it doesn't make sense to spend a lot on those items. Frugal beauty tips are about being fashionable but on a budget. So, shop discount stores like Target for cheaper versions of "in" items that will be out before you can possibly wear them out.

Mend instead of tossing. In a society where everything seems disposable, we all tend to just toss something out when it breaks. But a minor tear, missing button or broken zipper is no reason to throw away a garment that's otherwise in good shape. All of those blemishes can be easily mended by hand - no special equipment required - at a far cheaper cost than replacing the item. If you're not sure exactly how to make the repair, just go to a fabric store. The employees can help you pick out the items you need to make the repair and explain how to make it.

Shop clearance. No list of frugal beauty tips would be complete without a simple reminder to buy stuff on sale, and the best sales are often end-of-season clearances. Stores frequently start stocking for the next season before you're out of the current one. So, you can buy items on clearance at a deep discount that you can still wear this season.

Don't buy for the name. For many years, there was a trend of people buying clothes that prominently displayed the brand or designer's name, as if the label was more important than the article of clothing. Buying for the label is NOT on the frugal beauty tips list! The frugal rule of thumb: Buy clothes that look good on you, fit your needs and fit your budget.

Frugal Beauty Tips for Hair & Body

Get haircuts at beauty schools. Cosmetology schools are great if you're looking to get a professional haircut at a discount price. Although you're bound to know someone who knows someone whose sister got a disastrous haircut by some student who was cutting hair for the first time, those stories are the exception rather than the rule. Students are closely supervised by experienced stylists, and the majority of clients who get their hair cut at a beauty school get a high-quality cut for a deeply discounted price.

Do it yourself. You probably don't want to cut your own hair, but there's a good chance you can manage trimming your kid's bangs, and many people safely color their own hair with good results. If not, there wouldn't be such a large selection of home-coloring products! And while you're at it, do you really need to pay someone to do your nails? Do your own manicures and pedicures at home, and you'll be surprised how much you save over the course of the year.

Other bodycare treatments you can do yourself: facials and hair removal. A number of facial products are widely available for different skin types, and a variety of hair removal products offer different removal techniques: creams, waxes, home electrolysis, etc. Effectiveness can vary among products, so try different types to see which ones work for you.

Make home your spa. Bodycare treatments can be made from a variety of ingredients you already have in your home. And they can give fantastic results for a fraction of the cost of commercial products. Check out my homemade skin care tips to learn how you can turn your home into your favorite spa.

Don't buy for the name. A frugal beauty tips repeat: the name on the label of your bodycare product is not as important as the product itself. Buy what works and what gives you the result you want, not the bottle with the popular name on the label. Whether it's shampoo, nail polish or makeup, buy the products that make you look and feel your best, not the ones with an impressive name. Who ever sees your toiletries anyway?
