Easter Decorations

Easter decorations are easy to make since the holiday theme is flexible. Some focus on the religious aspects of the holiday; some focus on the secular aspects, like the Easter bunny; and others go with a general spring theme. All of these approaches are appropriate, and you are likely to have plenty of materials on hand for making easy and frugal Easter decorations.

Religious decorations

Cross. For many people, Easter isn't about chocolate bunnies. It's about the religious significance of the holiday. If you want your Easter decorations to reflect the religious origins of the holiday, an easy way to do that is with a table centerpiece that features a cross decorated with flowers. You can make the cross from something lightweight like styrofoam, which would enable you to easily pin decorations to it, or something sturdier like two pieces of wood. Luckily, crosses are very simple to make.

You can also make and decorate crosses that you hang or display on a mantle or a table top like Christmas cards. You can have your kids make a variety of different ones or work together on one for a centerpiece.

Lilies Another common religious decoration is Easter lilies. These flowers have significance in the resurrection story. If you have a garden and can plant lilies, you can place them in pots and display them at Easter. Other options are silk flowers that can be reused each year or handmade art with lilies as the subject.

Lambs. Lambs are a sweet religious decoration, reflecting the idea that Jesus was the "lamb of God," but also evoking images or spring and new life. You can place stuffed animals that you already have on tables or mantles, or you can have your kids create their own lamb art by drawing a picture of a lamb and decorating it with cotton balls.

Secular decorations

Secular Easter decorations can focus on a variety of fun subjects. To create the right Hoppy Easter mood, incorporate these images:

1907 Easter bunny postcard Easter bunny. Pretty much any kind of rabbit can stand in for the Easter Bunny! If you have any stuffed animal rabbits, use them for a centerpiece. If not, cutouts of bunny silhouettes, rabbit photo collages, or drawings will all work.

Eggs. Nothing says "Easter" like eggs! Any kind of display involving eggs will evoke the spirit of the season. Display the eggs you'll be using for your Easter egg hunt, or make a stack of egg cut-outs with construction paper for your kids to decorate. You can even have a special indoor hunt with the paper eggs they create.

Chicks. Some eggs grow up to be chicks, so these cute, little fuzzy guys came to be synonymous with Easter. Or maybe it's all because of Peeps. Hard to know which came first! But incorporate a few chicks, sugary or otherwise, into your decor and you'll be in the spirit.

Spring-themed decorations

This is the easiest category of all for Easter decorations, since it focuses mostly on color and nature.

Pastel colors. Put out pillows, placemats, napkins, etc. in pastel yellows, pinks, blues, greens, and you'll create a spring feel without using any Easter-specific images at all.

Flowers. You can pick fresh flowers, use silk flowers over and over from year to year, or simply incorporate images of flowers into decorations, such as centerpieces, placemats, flags or table runners. The flower motif is appropriate all through spring and summer, so decorations or accessories that you use for Easter can stay on display for several months, as long as you remove any Easter-specific images.

Wreaths. Wreaths aren't just for Christmas. Any type of wreath base (sticks, ribbon-wrapped foam, etc.) can be decorated with ribbon, flowers, and decorations in spring colors.

Hats. Hats can be hung as decoration, just like wreaths. Typically, a wide-brimmed hat is used, and you decorate in the same way you would a wreath, then hang it on a door, wall, etc.

Baskets. While baskets tend to be associated with Easter eggs, you can also display one filled with other items, such as flowers, a plant, or moss with fruit, candy or decorative marbles.

Nests. Like baskets, nests evoke the image of eggs but can be filled with anything you like.
